Moving to the Falklands With Family

If you are planning on moving to the Falklands with children, there is plenty of support in place to help your whole family. If you have questions about childcare or schools, here’s some information that might help.

Childcare in the Falklands

Childcare options include nurseries and registered childminders for children aged 3 months to 4 years, as well as holiday, breakfast, and after-school clubs for up to age 12.

Schools available to families

Schools in the Falklands broadly follow the National Curriculum for England, with additional local history and environmental studies. Children in Stanley can attend local schools, while those in rural areas access Camp Education until age 9.

Secondary school students attend the Falkland Islands Community School, and some further education is available through Falkland College, which offers online and apprenticeship options.

Can I bring my pet to the Falklands?

It is possible to import pets like dogs and cats to the Islands. Pets travel weekly to the islands but some costs and details need to be considered.

There are special airlines like Jets for Pets, that specialise in handling pet transportation and can advise you on how to start the process. You may need to cover the cost of accommodation for your pet until they can travel, so factoring that cost in is essential, as delays can sometimes happen.

Pet policies and accommodation

Before organising transportation for your pet, it is important to check with your landlord in the Falklands to see if it is allowed. There may be fees for extra cleaning or pet-proofing a property.

If you are looking to get a pet while on the islands, you should take time to think about your long-term plans and what will happen to the animal if you plan to leave the Falklands in the future.

Medical requirements

You must apply for an Import Licence from a veterinary department before bringing your pet. This may involve vaccinations, tests and checks. On arrival there is typically a 48-hour house quarantine.

Vets and pet services

There is veterinary care on the Islands and several pet services, including boarding and grooming. However, pet insurance may not cover you when you are in the Falklands.
