How Weather Affects Daily Life

Rotor Winds & Travel

These strong winds are caused by localised changes in wind speed and direction. They can be sudden, unpredictable, and highly gusty.

They are recurrent around Mount Pleasant Airport and can cause turbulence for aircraft during takeoff and landing. Hence, when a rotor wind is forecast, the airfield shuts down operations for fixed-wing aircraft. This means that delays of one day or more are relatively common (once a month, minimum) and it is advisable to allow for extra time when planning to visit home or booking a holiday overseas, especially when a connecting flight is needed.

Ozone Layer Hole & Sunscreen

The Falkland Islands have higher-than-average UV due to the hole in the ozone layer over the area. The ozone layer is a shield in the atmosphere that absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. But a thinning of this layer over the Antarctic region, including the Falklands, means more intense UV reaches the surface.

This means it is advised to wear sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and sunglasses when outdoors for long periods of time, even when it appears cloudy.

This will prevent sunburn, premature skin ageing and skin cancer

Reapply sunscreen regularly and wear protective clothing (long sleeves, hats, sunglasses with UV protection) when outdoors, especially during peak sun hours (10 AM – 4 PM).
