Fishing, Kayaking & Other Water Activities

Man fishing

The Falkland Islands are an unspoiled playground for water sports; a true adventure for those willing to get wet!

You will find world-class fishing and memorable opportunities for kayaking, surfing, and paddleboarding.

If you want to participate in water activities, a good-quality wetsuit is essential to handle the cool South Atlantic water. It is a good idea to purchase one before travelling to the Falklands, although you may be able to buy a second-hand one on the Islands.

Local adventure operators offer guided experiences and equipment hire on the Islands. If you plan to venture independently, check the forecasts: the weather can be unpredictable. Be ready for wind changes and prepare a backup route.

Fishing

The Falklands boast countless creeks and estuaries where you can fish for brown trout or mullet in the tranquillity of remote open landscapes.

The trout fishing season runs from September to April, with peak months in September to October and February to March. Mullet, however, can be fished all year round.

While there are good fishing spots within easy reach of Stanley, many fishing locations tend to be further afield and require a 4×4 vehicle.  Prime spots include the San Carlos River on East Falkland and the Warrah River on West Falkland.  Many fishing spots are on private land and may require an additional fee as well as landowner permission.

Kayaking & Paddleboarding

Exploring the Falklands by kayak or paddleboard is an unforgettable way to experience the dramatic coastline, secluded beaches, and incredible wildlife. Paddling through crystal-clear waters, you may find yourself gliding past penguins, dolphins, and even whales during the right season. Guided kayak tours are offered locally, but equipment hire and sale is limited, so if you want to venture out on your own, consider shipping equipment here before you move.

Surfing

Both beginners and experienced surfers can enjoy the thrill of the South Atlantic waves. The Falklands boast some great surf spots, especially on the east-facing beaches. Surf Bay, just a short drive from Stanley, is the most popular spot with waves and a long stretch of white sand. Rookery Bay and Yorke Bay also have suitable conditions depending on the weather.
