Common Challenges

Windy coastline

Internet & connectivity

Due to the remote location, the Falkland Islands use satellites for internet access. This means slower speeds and higher costs than the UK and other countries. If the internet is essential for work or daily life, check out the latest service options and pricing.

Costs and logistics for bringing pets

Bringing pets to the Falklands is strict and expensive. Pets can only be imported and exported from select countries via LATAM flights through Santiago Airport, Chile. If you’re thinking of moving with a pet check out the “Moving with family and pets” section for full details.

Groceries Availability

While there is a range of groceries, toiletries and household essentials available, the choice of brands and varieties is limited compared to larger towns. If you have specific requirements or dietary needs, you may need to arrange for shipments. See the Living Here section for more info.

Weather

The weather can be changeable so bringing thin layers of clothing, that can be added or taken off, is advised. It is also worth investing in a good-quality windproof coat, sturdy outdoor footwear, and waterproof trousers. Also, due to the ozone layer hole above the Falklands, UV radiation is strong so make sure to wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat when outside.

More info about the weather here.

Accommodation

Rapid economic growth in the Falkland Islands over the last few years has put some pressure on the availability of local housing stock. As a result, there might not be a vast range of options available.

Retirement Pension Scheme

The Falkland Islands have a contributory pension scheme which pays out a state pension when you retire (currently 65). Contributions are mandatory for employers and employees earning above a certain threshold and are deducted from salaries. See the FIG Pensions webpage for more information or contact Pensions directly at:

Medical Care & Charges

Residents can access most healthcare services, including prescriptions, for free. Variable charges, however, may apply to items such as spectacles, dentures, and cosmetic dentistry such as crowns and bridges.

Biosecurity Regulations

Restrictions are in place on the import of some types of food, plants, and animal products as they could cause harm to the Falklands environment, economy or inhabitants. Find full guidance on what you can and can’t bring to the island here.

Transport & Vehicles

A vehicle is a great way to get around, especially outside Stanley. Learn more about transport options and how to purchase a car on the Getting Around page.

Shipping personal effects

If you are planning a longer-term move, you might want to ship down personal belongings and household items before arriving on the Islands. Heavy baggage can be sent to Islands by sea, but keep in mind that it might take up to three months for items to arrive from a UK address to the Islands. Learn more about shipping here.
