Nationality

  • 44.6% of the population was born in the Falkland Islands.
  • The largest foreign-born populations are from the UK.
  • There are people from 71 different countries living in the Islands.
  • 76% of the population identify as Falkland Islanders, British or a mix of both.

Employment & Economic Data

  • The labour force participation rate is 89%, much higher than the UK (78%) and OECD average (75%).
  • The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) is the biggest employer, with 33% of the workforce. Other key sectors are construction (11%), agriculture (10%) and wholesale & retail trade (10%).
  • Self-employment accounts for 15% of workers, mainly in agriculture, tourism, and construction.
  • The average income for people in employment rose 13% from 2016, to £29,900
  • The average household income is around £49,000, up 12% from 2016.
