Electricity

Electricity in the Falklands operates on a 220/240 volts, 50 Hz system, using standard British three-pronged plugs. Government properties are equipped with meters, and electricity is charged at 35p per unit.

Residents can purchase electricity cards from local supermarkets although some households are billed on a quarterly basis.

Heating and fuel

Most homes in the Falklands utilise kerosene for heating and hot water, which is stored in outdoor tanks. Cooking appliances are typically powered by electricity or gas cylinders. Residents are advised to regularly top up their fuel tanks to prevent outages. This can be arranged through Stanley Services.

Water

Tap water in the Falklands is processed at a filtration plant and is safe to drink. The Public Works Department’s Water Section maintains the water services, and any maintenance or other issues are communicated through Falkland Islands Government press releases.

Waste and recycling

Each property is provided with a black bin for general waste, collected weekly, and a green bin for cans, collected monthly. While recycling options for paper, plastics, or cardboard are currently unavailable, glass bottles and jars can be recycled at designated points around Stanley.

Internet and Mobile Phone

Sure (South Atlantic) Ltd is the sole provider of internet and telephone services in the Falklands. Due to the Islands’ remote location, internet speeds are slower and more expensive compared to larger countries.

A range of broadband packages is available, with free usage during off-peak hours (12 midnight to 6 am). To set up a broadband account, residents must first apply for a residential telephone line. Mobile coverage has improved but may still be limited in certain areas. Local SIM cards can be purchased from the Sure shop on Ross Road, and it’s essential to ensure your mobile phone is unlocked before arrival.
