FAQ

Debbie

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions people ask before making the move.

Do I need to book my own flights?

No. Once all necessary pre-employment screening checks are complete and a Work Permit has been obtained, a start date will be mutually agreed. After this is finalised, the Falkland Island Government (FIG) will book your flights on your behalf.
See the Flights & Connectivity section for more details.

Where will I be living?

FIG can provide accommodation. Once you receive a job offer, you will be asked to complete a Housing Form where you can specify your preferences (e.g. number of bedrooms, flat or house, garden, etc.). While FIG cannot guarantee an exact match, they will do their best to allocate accommodation that aligns with your needs.
See the Living Here section for more information.

Will I need a vehicle?

Being able to drive is a definite advantage, especially if you want to explore beyond Stanley (known locally as “Camp”).
See the Transport & Infrastructure section to learn more about vehicle ownership and transport options.

Can I bring my pets?

Yes – cats and dogs can be brought to the Islands. However, they can only be imported/exported from certain countries via LATAM flights, transiting through Santiago Airport (Chile). Be aware that this process can be expensive. See the Moving with Family & Pets section for full details.

Can I buy food that meets my dietary requirements?

In most cases, yes. However, there can be a limited amount of choice on certain brands and types of products compared to larger countries, so bear in mind that you may need to bring particular favourite items with you, or order them in bulk to be shipped down after your arrival.

What do I need to bring with me or ship down?

This largely depends on your personal preferences. The What to pack section includes some helpful suggestions. Keep in mind that shipped items may take a while to arrive, so bring essentials in your luggage or ship in advance if possible.

Facebook pages: Falkland Islands Buy & Sell and Falkland Islands Bring & Buy are worth joining. In these groups you can buy or sell second-hand items locally, such as clothing, gardening supplies, furniture, household wares and appliances. The Charity Shop, ‘Bargains Galore’ is also a good place to find a wide range of items, and Flea Markets are held on a regular basis: dates are advertised in the Penguin News, radio and social media.

Are there job opportunities for anyone accompanying me?

Yes, though opportunities for accompanying dependents (aged 16 and above) may not always align with their existing qualifications. There is potential to explore new roles and gain different experiences. Under the Falkland Islands Constitution, preference is given to suitably qualified local residents, but there are recognised skill and labour shortages.
Visit the Customs & Immigration website for guidance on dependent work permits.

What are the schooling options?

Read the Schooling Options for Families section to find out about the local schools available.

Will my mobile phone work in the Falklands?

Possibly – some providers offer international roaming in the Falklands, but it’s best to check with your network.
Alternatively, you can purchase a local mobile SIM card. See the Utilities, Internet & Mobile Networks section for more details and links to roaming providers.

What internet options are available?

Sure (South Atlantic)  is the exclusive provider of internet and telephone services in the Falklands. Due to the remote location and reliance on satellite facilities, internet speeds are slower and more expensive than in the UK or elsewhere. However, a range of broadband and data packages are available, including free off-peak internet usage. See the Utilities, Internet & Mobile Networks section for more information and setup advice.

How do I find out about Falkland Islands tax and pension requirements?

Check the Financial Considerations section for information on taxation. You can also visit the Taxation Office website for current information on local tax requirements. The Industries & Job Market Overview section of this site will give you an overview of the pension and retirement system. You can also get more in-depth information on the retirement schemes on the Pension Office website.
It is advisable to contact the tax authority in your home country to understand any implications of overseas employment.
