The Falklands’ location meant that they played a major role in the exploration of the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic. As such, the Historic Dockyard Museum, the Christie Community Library and local bookshops all have a vast range of books on the subject. Likewise, there have been many accounts of the 1982 conflict put to paper. Whether your interest is military history or the personal and moving accounts of the people who lived through it, there is no shortage of reading material to learn about this difficult yet pivotal moment in the islands’ history. Tales of early life in the Falklands abound, describing in intricate and fascinating detail the day-to-day life as the community worked hard to establish itself on the islands.
Traditional Scottish and English folk dances are part of social events and balls with lessons in the run up to the May and Winter Balls. throughout the year. Regular gigs by local cover bands make for a small but vibrant music scene. The local amateur dramatics group, FIODA, stage plays and musicals throughout the year, including the much-feted Dragstravaganza, a bawdy cabaret-style celebration of inclusivity and diversity in the islands.
