Driving in the Falklands
Speed limits on the island are in miles per hour (mph). In Stanley, the limit is 25mph, while outside of the town, it increases to 40mph. Keep an eye out for areas with unsurfaced roads, where it can be a little more challenging. It’s best to reduce speed in these areas to keep control and avoid accidents.
When driving off-road or in rural areas, always inform the landowner or farmer of your plans and get permission to drive on their land. It’s also recommended to travel with a tow rope, spare tyre, and bumper jack to help in case of emergencies.
Bicycles and E-Bikes
Cycling is a popular way to get around for those who enjoy outdoor activities. If you’re a cyclist, you may want to ship a mountain, gravel or hybrid bike to the Falklands, as the road network can be difficult. If you are a road cyclist, bear in mind that the longest stretch of tarmac road is 60km (36miles).
E-bikes are also permitted on the island if they meet the requirements outlined in the Road Traffic Ordinance 1948:
- The motor must have an output of 750 watts or less
- The motor must not be able to propel the bike when it is travelling at over 20 mph
- The bike does not include a throttle or any other mechanism by which the power or speed of the engine is regulated other than the pedals or brakes.
While e-bikes don’t require insurance, checking that your bike complies with local regulations is essential.
