Essential Checklist

Moving to the Falklands isn’t your typical relocation, so it helps to have a clear idea of what is needed to get organised before you arrive. From possessions to lifestyle considerations, here are some things to keep in mind as you prepare for your new home:

Practical admin

Remembering the vital documents is at the top of the list. Ensure you  have original copies of your passports, work permits, medical records, and any qualifications you must show.

Having easy access to all your financial and contact details while you are in the Falklands can be a real help. Phone signals and Wi-Fi can sometimes be patchy, so it is always good to have quick access to numbers and details that can help.

It’s a good idea to plan ahead with medical supplies, particularly if you have specific prescriptions that may be more difficult to source immediately. Bringing enough medication to cover you for the first few months will give you peace of mind and make it easier to set up everything locally.

Mindset and lifestyle

The relaxed, small, friendly community offers a unique living experience that embraces adventure, connections, and nature. Preparing yourself for how you will feel away from your current home is essential. Will you suffer from homesickness away from family or friends? Are you ready to throw yourself into a new way of life and embrace the opportunities? Taking a moment to visualise your new lifestyle and how you will feel will really help when settling in.

Clothing

The weather in the Falklands can be a little unpredictable, so it’s important to pack for a range of conditions. Warm, waterproof clothing, layers, and walking boots will be good for exploring the Islands. Clothes for warmer weather are also advised, as are those for special events like dinners, community celebrations, and work functions. For children, layers are key, and extra shoes come in handy!

Electronics, exercise and entertainment

Chargers, adaptors, hard drives, entertainment devices, sports gear and clothing, are all useful. There are lots of community sports clubs and teams to join on the island, and these are a great way to meet new people and keep fit at the same time.

Comfort and homely touches

Having a few comforts from home can be a nice way to bring a little piece of yourself. Favourite foods, books, crafts, hobbies, and photos are great for helping you feel at home and may even be something to share with your new community.
