Why we collect your personal information?

Think Falklands (“we”, “our”, or “the / this Website”) is a public-facing initiative supported by the Falkland Islands Government. While it functions independently from the Government to provide information about living and working in the Islands, it follows all applicable government policies concerning the handling and protection of personal data. Under the UK Data Protection Act 2018, followed as best practice, data is collected for the following reasons:

(a) We need it to perform a public service/function as a local authority
(b) We have a legal obligation
(c) We have a contractual obligation
(d) We have a vital interest
(e) We have a legitimate interest
(f) We have your explicit consent

The Website processes personal information to provide users with information about the Falkland Islands. We do this with your explicit consent and to provide service.

What type of information do we have?
Personal data is defined as any information which identifies a living individual. We collect and process personal data in many different ways depending on how you interact with this website, “Think Falklands”. Some personal information may be classed as sensitive due to the nature of the data and will be protected accordingly.

To enable us to provide the services related to the ‘Think Falkland’ initiative we collect the following information from you directly:

  • Name
  • Contact Details (email address, phone number)
  • Message content (submitted directly to use via contact form or through social media
    accounts)

Some personal information may be classed as sensitive due to the nature of the data and will be protected accordingly. Examples of the type of sensitive personal data include: race; ethnic origin; religion; physical and mental health.

How we get the information?
The personal information we process is provided to us directly by you, as the data subject. The method of collection will depend on how you interact with this website and can include your interaction with the initiative ‘Think Falklands’ through third party platforms on social media.

What happens to the information we have?
We use the information that you have given us in order to fulfil our function through this website. We process your information to:

  • Respond to your enquiries and provide direct information about living and working in the Falkland Islands
  • To engage with you via social media

  • Data profiling – this is when your information is summarised and examined to enable us to tailor and improve our services and the quality of our information to meet your specific needs

How do we store your information?
Any personal data relating to an individual – in paper or electronic format – is securely stored within Government Directorates. We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to safeguard your information against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse.

We retain your data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, after which it is securely deleted so that information is irretrievable.

How do you get access your personal data?
Individuals have the right, in accordance with the FIG Data Protection Policy (2020), FIG Access to Information Code of Practice (2016), to access their personal data held by FIG and to ensure it is accurate. This extends to:

  1. Your right of access – to ask us for copies of your personal information.
  2. Your right to rectification – to rectify information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete.
  3. Your right to erasure – to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances.
  4. Your right to restriction of processing – to ask us to restrict the processing of your information in certain circumstances.
  5. Your right to object to processing – to object to the processing of your personal data in certain circumstances. This includes redrawing your explicit consent.
  6. Your right to data portability – to ask that we transfer the information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances.

We endeavour to respond to acknowledge your request within 5 working days and respond fully to your request within 20 working days from receipt of the request. The 20 days may be extended if the request is complex but we will inform you if this applies. Should the request also require extensive research then the individual will be contacted with an explanation.

FIG and ‘Think Falklands’ reserves the right to refuse disclosure of personal data if the request covers exempt information. You will be notified if your request covers exempt information, such as information relating to a third party.

Complaints
